Assessment ]1B]

The target audience of Asda FM is the people who shop in in Asda. All different types of people shop in Asda. so Asda FM will have a big audience. This is so they can advertise
they're products to people. They reach 18,000,000 weekly listeners it is one of the biggest radio stations in the UK. Asda FM is a in-store radio station played to the shoppers of Asda.
The purpose of Asda FM is to entertain their listeners. It is also to advertise their products and help people part with they're money. It's kind of like subliminal messaging. advertising their products to all times of people... so they have to target different people at different sorts of the day, so: After school they may advertise sweets or snacks for school kids to buy. This is so they can advertise they're products to children whom make they're parents buy the product. It manipulates them.
The music genre changes based on when Asda think what type of shoppers are in the store at what time.
In the morning Asda FM plays mainstream pop. After school it plays "Disney-Style stuff" to appeal to the kids that come into the store with their parents. and at night they play Urban music and UK dubstep.
Rap/dance would be played on Saturday and Sunday night. They play upbeat genres at night for the night staff and the target audience of people who come in at night for late night snacks- Teenagers who are out or late night workers.
I think Asda FM appeal to their audience nicely as they know when different age groups come in to their shop. they know what to advertise at what time and some people don't even realize it. almost like a different type of subliminal messaging.

ASSESSMENT [1a]

Question: Critically comment and evaluate - How effective is the station at serving the target audience of 15-29 year old's though the stations music scheduling?

I don't like radio one much, I think they play too much pop music during the day and think they should cater for different scenes and genres. They do this as if they play different types of music they would have to pay more for the licence to play it. Radio one is a station broadcast with the BBC. They play the top 40 charts.

Radio one only caters for one sort of genre which is Popular Music during the day. Music could be made popular by the stations. If a well known artist(s) like Chase & Status made a track and didn't release it to the radio stations then not as many people would listen to it and therefore it wouldn't be as popular. Teenagers and young adults are more likely to like the music Radio One plays as they are more enthusiastic about different types of music. However in the evening they play specialist programs like punk, rock, trance, Dubstep and D&B

Radio one's Target audience is 15-29 years old this means they can schedule more popular artists and can showcase newer artists to younger people. Their format is Top 40 chart. They mainly play new tracks and sometimes on the weekend will play some classic hits.

On the weekend Radio one play specialist programs like Dance: 'Radio Ones Dance Anthems' and Charlie Sloths 'Trap & Twerk" tracks, this doesn't appeal to a bigger audience but does appeal to another audience which may not like the popular music that other people like.

I don't think that the station caters effectively for all the scenes and music because the station mainly plays Pop. This may be because they want the mainstream music listeners to listen to the pop music in the top 40.
During the day Radio One play top 40 tracks and pop.

I think Radio one are doing well achieving the entertainment for their target audience as they are always playing one sort of music. A lot of people just stick to mainstream music as they may be able to relate to the music?.

Some people might just listen to it to fit in. However Radio one have a presenter called 'Nick Grimshaw' who presents the breakfast show. They sacked Chris Moyels as he was 'too old' and didn't fit their target audience profile. however Nick Grimshaw talks about 'Strictly come dancing' and programs like that. They seem to talk a lot about subjects that their target audience don't like.

The evening schedule is different to the daytime schedule because they play specialist programs in the night/evening. where as in the morning they play popular music like the top 40's.

Music Station questions

1) What is a stations "Music Format?"

Something which tells the radio what they can and cannot play.

2) What is an A B C Playlist?

How popular the track/artist is will depend on where the track is placed in the playlist... A being the best (Played 3-4 times a day) and C being the least played. (Played once in the day)

3)What is "Music Scheduling"?

Music Scheduling is where the music is put into playlists and set a time to play.

4)

5) Explain some techniques used by a music scheduler that keep the listener interested.

After the news the type of music played will not be sad, for instance they wouldn't schedule Adele after the news. as they don't want people to listen to a depressing radio station.
